Black Felted Newsboy Cap with Rainbow Fungi
Black Felted Newsboy Cap with Rainbow Fungi
Do You Crave Colours? This Black Felted Newsboy Cap with Rainbow Fungi will make you smile. It is kind of classic and everyday, and at the same time, it is a very playful hat. On top, there are felted-in mushrooms that dance!
INSPIRATION:
As you know, hats have backstories. Here's the one for this Newsboy Cap.
Earlier in 2022, I took Fiona Duthie's Colour Studies in Feltmaking. While I indeed studied colour theory when I went to RISD (centuries ago), a refresher was needed.
As part of Fiona's class, the students hand-carded up a Colour Wheel using wool fibres. We solely used the three primary colours: Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta. And while Hatmaking was not part of our assignments, I thought it would be helpful to have all of my separate samples in one place. So voila - Black Felted Newsboy Cap with Rainbow Fungi!
Added bonus: the hat reminds me of all the colourful fun art educator, Cassie Stephens, comes up with on Instagram!
COLOUR:
• This felted cap is predominately black with a dozen brightly coloured fungi cups ranging from ROYGBIV -- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. In the center of the rainbow, there are some white viscose fibres felted in. These symbolize mycelium - mushroom 'roots'!
SHAPE:
• This felted hat with earflaps is a classic newsboy cap with a twist. It has twelve adorable felted mushroom cups that stand up from the cap. These fungi are arranged in a circle like the Colour Wheel. It can be very handy if you are studying colour theory! Incidentally, the colours used are taken from the Ives Colour Wheel.
• There are earflaps, so this hat will keep you cosy!
SIZE:
• The hat measures 3.1" / 8 cm in height, 10.5" / 27 cm in width, and 12.25" / 31 cm in depth. The individual fungi cups measure approximately 1.75" / 4.5 cm in height and the earflaps measure 6" / 15 cm.
• It is a lightweight felted hat at 3.1 ounces / 87 grams.
• HEADSIZE - It's a SMALL sized hat and fits a range of 21" / 53 cm to 22" / 56 cm.
If needed, this hat can be stretched to medium size. Please let me know when you are ordering. The model wearing the hat has thick chin-length hair: this hat might work better with a shorter hairstyle. The earflaps would then hug the ears better.

Care
Care
Felt is an eco-friendly, fiber that is water and stain resistant. Dust is not a problem - just give it a shake.
This hat can be gently hand-washed in cool water. Rinse. Blot dry on a towel. Place a small towel inside to shape. Always air dry hand felted wearables.

What is Felt?
What is Felt?
Each FeltHappiness Hat is entirely handmade and created from soft Merino wool fibers using the technique of wet felting. It's an ancient and simple craft that takes patience and lots of kneading to shrink the fibers into a strong, flexible, and warm felt. To learn more, see HERE.
In addition to insulating, wool naturally resists water. Hence, your felted hat will keep you warm in chilly weather and dry in light rain. Plus, wool resists mildew, dirt, and fire!
It's magical stuff!
Measuring Your Head
Measuring Your Head
Every head has its own unique size and shape, which can be measured with a flexible tape measure or even a piece of string.
Take the tape measure and encircle your head, just above the top of your ears. Make sure that the tape measure goes over that small bump at the back of your head. Please don't pull it tightly. Leave a little 'ease' so that one finger can fit under the tape. An ear-to-ear measure can be helpful too.
Measure three times: it is surprising how it can vary!
Inches or centimetres are fine.
Sustainability
Sustainability
Wool is a highly sustainable and eco-friendly material. Sheep grow their wool continuously and need to be shorn regularly for their own health and comfort. This means that wool is a renewable resource, and the production of wool does not harm the animal.
In addition, wool is biodegradable, which means that it will naturally decompose over time and will not accumulate in landfills or oceans. This makes wool a great alternative to synthetic materials that take centuries to decompose and contribute to environmental pollution.
Moreover, wool is an excellent insulator, which means that it can help to reduce energy consumption by keeping us warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It is also naturally flame-resistant and has antibacterial properties, making it a safe and hygienic choice for clothing and bedding.
Overall, wool is a sustainable and natural product with many benefits for both the environment and consumers. FeltHappiness Hats uses wool into our products to promote more sustainable and ethical fashion practices.
